This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
